Don’t be a coward

Also don’t open your eyes underwater.

The annual Polar Bear Dip New Years Day in Herring Cove.

Come see the drunks, the fats, the skivs, the bosoms, and of course the cowards.

Not for me you say. Probably not, but that’s the point. Have fun for once in your life, or year.

I have averaged the amount of hours I spend indoors this winter, on average per day I am spending upwards to 22 hours a day indoors. That is as most (generous) 2 hours a day total exposure to the elements. From walking from house, to car, driving everywhere, underground garages, pedways. Don’t get me wrong I love me some cozy fireplaces, but enough is enough.

Get outside, the sun is beautiful on the face. The air fresh, good for the lungs. As for jumping in freezing cold polluted water to start the New Year, well… it is not for everybody, but it might be for you.

At least come, enjoy the party, hundreds will be there, dog friendly, bring donations for Feed Nova Scotia.

Celebrity Fitness: Sun Maid Raisin Girl Loses 20 Pounds

http://joshsgarage.typepad.com/articles/2009/12/celebrity-fitness-sun-maid-raisin-girl-loses-20-pounds.html

After 90 years, the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl starts working out.

Immediately drops 20 pounds.

I'm proud of her, and next time I see her, I'm giving her a double high five.

Apparently there is some sort of controversy of Sun-Maid Girl's extreme makeover.

Everyone is taking shots at the "new" Sun-Maid girl.

People are saying that it's all plastic surgery?!?!?!

Seriously? People need to get a grip here.

Clearly, Sun-Maid Girl is putting in the work.

It just goes to show - some times when you start working out and changing your body, you don't get the social support you'd want.

People want you to stay the same.

Halifax News Net

Quite a few of you have accepted my invitation to get in touch, so today, I thought I’d answer some of your questions. Ready? Here goes:
Q: When will we have an ice surface in the Grand Parade?
A: Council has adopted a plan for the Grand Parade which identifies ways it can be made more useable and one of the proposals is for recessed water jets to provide fountains in the summer and water for an ice surface in the winter. The problem is, the Grand Parade slopes four feet from west to east, making the idea impractical for now. However, when the retaining wall which runs along the Barrington Street side is rebuilt, which will happen within 10 years, it will trigger the redesign of the entire Grand Parade, possibly including provision for a skating rink. Keep your fingers crossed.

Q: When will we get another Woodside ferry?
A: We did actually apply for funding for a fourth ferry through the federal stimulus program, but the proposal didn’t meet Ottawa’s criteria. The ebb and flow of passenger traffic on the ferries is monitored constantly by Metro Transit, as is the potential for future expansion of routes, possibly to places like Eastern Passage, Purcells Cove, Rockingham, Bedford and, of course, an addition to the Woodside service.
Meanwhile, the good news is, HRM has established a reserve fund which will allow us to replace our vessels as they age and so avoid any disruption to existing services.

Q: Why doesn’t HRM use more of its own resources to solve its problems, instead of hiring outside companies for studies and surveys?
A: That’s a great idea. I agree that we should take advantage of our own resources if we have them on hand. If we have the staff to make us more efficient, we should take that information. We’ve done so in the past and we continue to look for ways to make ourselves more effective and efficient on behalf of taxpayers. I welcome ideas from the public on ways to make us more efficient, absolutely.

Q: There are some untidy buildings in downtown Halifax; where are the bylaw enforcers?
A: We have numerous bylaw services officers on duty to enforce HRM’s Dangerous and Unsightly Premises bylaw and to respond to complaints from the public, no matter where you live. I’ve checked and, at the moment, there aren’t any complaints pending relating specifically to the actual downtown core.
If, however, you believe a building is dangerous or unsightly, you should phone our call-
centre line at 490-4000 and report it. Your complaint will then be investigated by one of our officers. This whole issue of community appearance is one we take seriously which is why council recently adopted the visionary HRM-
byDesign plan for downtown.
This strategy outlines clear regulations for development to ensure every building makes a positive contribution to the overall look and feel of the urban core.
As well, council has established a heritage conservation district on Barrington Street. As a result, we now have financial and regulatory incentives to encourage property owners to invest in restoration, rehabilitation and enhancement of their buildings.
I’m positive this kind of leadership by council will see a ripple effect of benefits for adjacent downtown areas.
Thank you all for the feedback and I’ll see you here next week.

You can contact Mayor Peter Kelly at city hall at kellyp@halifax.ca or by phoning 490-4010.

H!N!

As our goverment is chastized at the provincial and federal levels for their attempt to vacinate some 20 million people in under a month, I cant help but notice how the swine flu is effecting day to day life.

Hand sanadizer galor.

I just witnessed a 20 something girl whip down a table at Saint Mary's University with a disinfectant coth, prior to sitting down to study.

Is this overkill? Does she have her H1N1 shot? If so why the whip down? If not, and she is still afaird of the sickness then why not go get her shot instead.

How the hell is this thing passed on to one another anyway?

I remember a few years ago, there was a breakout of some sort of dieses that swept across the many Univeristies of Nova Scotia.

When will this paraonia end? Who do you believe?

The Importance of being Idle

Long overdue perhaps. Open to the public, documenting a private life. 23 years old, and no where to go but up. Life in Halifax, Nova Scotia should be documented for later comparisons. How has the city changed. How have I changed. Why are people so strange. Hopefully someone will stumble upon this and find some solace in the fact that there is someone else out there with the same sense of humor.

Pop culture, hidden gems, and social history.

6am really isn't that early anymore.
